BIO
From Glasgow, Scotland, weighing in at 0.08 metric tons - Tony Gormley – ‘does some law’ and owns a gym – Buffalo Strength in Mui Wo. He wasn’t a raging success as a lawyer on a professional, financial or even personal level. He had the odd successes and met a lot of interesting people, and it paid his bills.
Owing to volatile circumstances he’s not comfortable speaking in detail about his professional activities during the last 24 months; but it involved a lot of waiting in cells and enjoying luxuriantly cold air conditioning in Winter. He also contributed to the odd book for Halsbury's.
The gym is his passion and his medicine. He started it in 2018 during a fit of depression, but doesn’t want to wholly credit that for the small success it has become. There members are largely, lovely people who have made his business sustainable, in spite of the shutdowns this and last year.
They are the cream of humanity and they will be your friend. I’d urge you to go and meet them.

Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
VIBErations podcast Ep 27. Dr. Rhona Buchanan at VIBE Book & Music Shop in Mui Wo on Lantau Island in HK on 28th May 2021
BIO
Dr. Rhona Buchanan has a wealth of experience since qualifying as a vet many years ago… She worked for 4 years with the PDSA a UK animal-based charity caring for the health of all domestic pets of those with a low income. A further 4 years as a self-employed locum working the length and breadth of the UK, many of the practices she covered were one vet clinics where she ended up covering for the owners on a repeat basis.
4 years as a Veterinary Director for Cats Protection - a UK animal charity where she was heavily involved in supervising the welfare and care of all the cats rescued by the charity. She liaised with all the Veterinary Clinics providing treatment and also with UK universities ensuring the cats in her practice were receiving the best and most modern standard of Veterinary care.
Over the last 14 years as part of her managerial roles she’s been proactively involved in coaching and mentoring young vets both in UK and in Hong Kong. Given there was no provision for a Veterinary service on Peng Chau Dr Rhona has now launched Peng Chau Veterinary Home Visit Service aiming to service the area of Peng Chau and the outer islands. She can only provide a home visit service and is therefore limited in the services she can provide. However, when it is clear that any pet requires more attention than she can provide, e.g. radiography, surgery or hospitalisation, she has an excellent working relationship with many vet hospitals on Lantau and Hong Kong Island and can arrange a referral.
She therefore offers a basic diagnosis and treatment of most conditions, and of course preventative health care: vaccinations, flea, tick & worm control. She can also assist owners looking to leave HK. She is able to source and supply most medications and food supplements given 48 hours notice.

VIBErations Episode 26 - Karing Frontiers
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
VIBErations podcast Ep 26. Karing Frontiers at VIBE Book & Music Shop in Mui Wo on Lantau Island in HK on 12th May 2021 Featuring interview with Angelica Cheng and Benny Berkenkotter
2 of 8 university students who have setup an NGO called Karing Frontiers. The purpose of ‘Karing Frontiers’ is to provide fundraising for refugee Karen students in Myanmar. VIBE has donated to this very worthy cause by donating 2 ‘goody bags’ for prizes in their mid-June raffle and sponsoring a student for 1 year via their website at www.karingfrontiers.com
This year, Karing Frontiers is aiming to raise HK$302,000 to empower 534 students and 60 teaching staff among five different post-secondary schools located in refugee camps. HK$560 is all it takes to sponsor one student for a whole academic year. Angelica Cheng is a rising junior at Tufts University, studying electrical engineering. A high school trip in 2018 to the Thai-Myanmar border would lead to her developing a passion for working with refugees and marginalized peoples.
In the following year, she began a high school project in the effort to secure access to higher education in the refugee camps on the Thai border. Eventually, the project would lead to the beginnings of Karing Frontiers, a registered NGO in Hong Kong. Now, when she’s not losing sleep to school, she works as the program director at Karing Frontiers.
Benny Berkenkotter is a rising junior environmental science major at the University of Vermont. He has been a part of Karing Frontiers since 2019, where he visited the Karen refugee camp and got to help with taking photos and videos of the students and teaching English. Now, he helps with coordinating fundraising strategies to keep the schools in the refugee camps afloat. His goal with Karing Frontiers is to give the Karen education system a stable and worry-free future so that the future generations of the Karen people also have a chance to become staples in modern-day society.

VIBErations Episode 23 - Martin Malden
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
VIBErations podcast Ep 23. Martin Malden of 'Lantau Network' at VIBE Book & Music Shop in Mui Wo on Lantau Island in Hong Kong on 23rd March 2021
BIO
Martin Malden is a permanent ex-pat. He grew up on a farm in what was originally Southern Rhodesia, when it was part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, in central Africa. After leaving school at the end of 1970, he did his National Service in 1971 and then went down to Durban, in South Africa, in 1972, where he spent his student years.
After graduating, he returned to what was by now simply Rhodesia, and went to work in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as secretary to two committees. These committees allocated foreign exchange to businesses developing industrial or commercial projects. By 1977, with the bush war in full swing, Martin could see by virtue of his position at Commerce & Industry, that the country was running out of money. So at the age of 25, and with thoughts of starting a family, he decided to leave Rhodesia, and arrived in the UK in May 1977.
He survived 17 years in the UK, eventually finding himself working in the then-fledgling mobile phone industry. He went self-employed in 1994, and joined a small team that came to Hong Kong in January 1995 to write the licence application for what became Sunday. The success of that project led to other projects in East and South Asia, where governments were issuing new mobile phone licences. Martin found living and working in Asia to be much closer to the entrepreneurial, self-reliant lifestyle that he grew up in – and the decision to make Asia his home was an easy one. Today, 26 years later, Martin has his own web development agency on Lantau Island and is thoroughly enjoying life!

VIBErations podcast Ep 21. Photographer Patrick Dransfield @ VIBE Book & Music Shop in Mui Wo on Lantau Island in Hong Kong on 10th March 2021
Patrick Dransfield, a long-term resident of Hong Kong, has long attempted to express through the medium of photography and writing, the empathetic connectedness we share as human beings. He has a deep interest in the visual arts and literature, of both the west and China. “It is my profound hope that through preserving these fleeting moments of Beijing street life from the 1980s, east and west can once again be reminded of our common humanity: our common needs, desires, hopes and dreams.”
Patrick holds a BA (Joint hons.) in English and History of Art from Leeds University and an MA in Far East Area Studies (Chinese Anthropology, Chinese History and Chinese Politics) from the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London. 10 Questions
1. Favourite book or author? The Magus, John Fowles : central characters Nicholas Urfe and Maurice Conchis – Island of Phraxos and London.
2. Favourite musical artist? Bob Dylan – (Its alright Ma, I’m only bleeding) My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards False gods, I scuff At pettiness which plays so rough Walk upside-down inside handcuffs Kick my legs to crash it off Say okay, I have had enough What else can you show me And if my thought-dreams could be seen They'd probably put my head in a guillotine But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only
3. Preferred drink? Depends on who is buying? Red wine - a Bordeaux, especially a good Pauillac (PU -YAC): wouldn’t say no to the Sauterne Chateau d’ Y’Quem (D’Qem) – very happy to settle for a 1999 Chateau Musar, however. I used to make wine and brew beer with my dad so on this the most serious of your questions I will use a Latin phrase which is close to what the amateur wine making judges had as their motto: ‘Ludex vinum insua merita’ – which means ‘Judge the wine on its own merits’.
4. Life motto? Don’t follow leaders: watch the parking meters from Dylan: ‘Ut ameris amabilis esto’ from Ovid: which means ‘If you want to be loved, be lovable”.
5. Favourite hk walk? Lantau Trail 6, I think. The bit that goes over 3 small peaks one of which is called Ling Wu Shan
6. Favourite hk restaurant? Best meal recently? La Petit Maison: best ambience? Tap Tap in Pui O and FCC main bar or outside by the pool at USRC, depending on whether I want company, or not.
7. Faced with a python whilst walking up to the Peak – what would you do? Actually this happened to Carmen and I on Lantau trail 6 and it was a cobra, shedding his skin in the spring. Standing still and not panicking usually means the snake vacates the premises. Having a stick and making noise before hand is a good preventative. A snake is not a monkey – I had to throw my lunch to one particularly aggressive macaque monkey on Monkey Hill. …
8. Best advice you were given? Punctuality is the courtesy of kings.
9. Finish this sentence… I live in Hong Kong because…of my wife Carmen.
10. Favourite area of Hong Kong? South Lantau – on our balcony in Ham Tin village
